October 27, 2025

A recent publication by Wallace Center GSR Mounika Parimi highlights “matrescence,” the transition to motherhood, as a critical and sensitive period in the maternal and child health (MCH) life course.

Published in Women’s Health Issues, the paper argues for integrating matrescence into the MCH life course framework to better capture the biological, psychological, and social changes that occur during and after pregnancy.

The work emphasizes how this transition has lasting implications for maternal health and health equity, and calls for expanded care and research beyond the postpartum period.

This publication reflects the Wallace Center’s commitment to advancing research that strengthens maternal health frameworks and supports long-term well-being for birthing people and families.
